Treating Dentofacial Deformities

What are Dentofacial deformities?

The term dentofacial deformity refers to significant deviations from the normal proportions of the face and jaws that also negatively affect the relationship of the teeth within jaw as well as the relationships of the jaws with one another (i.e., occlusion). The affected individuals will have varying degrees of compromise in their head and neck functions related to breathing, swallowing, speech, chewing, and lip closure and posture. A negative impact of the dentofacial dysmorphology on psychosocial health is also present.

The causes can be present at birth or may develop as the individual grows. These deformities are sometimes the outcomes of road traffic accidents and sports injuries. Tumour removal is a necessary evil and cause deformities in the dentofacial deformities.
CIMS has been regularly correcting these deformities and returning the near normal look, function, speech to these patients. We understand that a lost face is lost identity, downgrading of their quality of life! Striving to return these patients their lost confidence is a challenge that we undertake regularly.

Congenital, Developmental and Acquired deformities:

Deformities that are present since birth are congenital deformities as cleft lip and cleft palate, various syndromes of head and neck as Down’s Syndrome, Goldenhar Syndrome, Hemifacial Microsomia and many more.
Developmental deformities are those which develop in the head and neck regions as the child grows. These children are born near normal but as they grow, the upper or lower jaws or forehead slowly start increasing in size abnormally only on one side. These include many bone metabolic disorders as Fibrous Dysplasia, Cherubism, Hemifacial microsomia, Hemangiomas or blood tumours of the head and neck region.
Acquired deformities are a spectrum of deformities that a patient acquires due to any tumour surgery, or any deformities due to untended facial injuries. These injuries can be sports injuries, fall, accidents, etc.

Cleft lip and palate:

Cleft lip and palate are present as deformities at birth. These occur 1 in every 700 live births. The clefts in facial region bring upon the child and parents a huge social stigma and deep depression. We understand these kids and parents require a better understanding and more emotional support as well as an apt surgery.
The lip, mostly upper lip is split into two and most often accompanied with split in the palate, i.e, cleft palate. These babies have difficulty in suckling and the milk comes out through the nose. The cleft lip repair is done as early as four months of age and palate is repaired before the baby starts to talk, usually at ten months of age. These patients need a continuous monitoring over entire growing period upto18 years of age and require three more surgeries at different times of growth. They also require continuous follow up with Consultant Orthodontist as the teeth occur mal aligned and need to intercepted and managed during the milk tooth stage and all along the transition stage from milk teeth to permanent teeth. The upper jaw grows to be smaller than normal which is corrected at 16/17 years of age and finally a rhinoplasty is performed at 18/19 years of age to return a teenager a near normal face as well as a better self-esteem.

Correction of dentofacial deformities in syndromic patients:

Deformities in the head and neck demands an accurate planning and careful surgical execution with precision. Face is the social identity of the person and we understand a lost face is lost identity and a harbinger of depression and low self- esteem. We also understand that these deformities need to be corrected in a manner that they not only provide the correct aesthetic appearance but must also bear a near normal for and perform near normal functions.
These deformities may be through birth, or be developing with growth or can be after any tumour/ cancer removal or due to any injury. CIMS provides a customised planned surgery to restore the form, function and aesthetics of the face.
